WHAT'S IT TAKE TO BUILD A SPACECRAFT?

The Ranger the volunteers are building is not exactly a replica; it is a composite built out of actual parts from Ranger probes that didn’t end up flying to the moon. But that means that sorting out the parts – what they have and what’s missing – isn’t always easy. Volunteers must consult 50-year-old sketches and, of course, original Ranger project participant Bob Conover to make it as accurate as possible.

In the end, the completed spacecraft, much like many of its shiny gold parts, will look effortlessly majestic as it is displayed in the California Science Center’s new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, which is set to open in 2018.
